July 15th Culworth Village Hall
Full Report
At the October 2000 Parish Council meeting councillors were approached by a local resident with a proposal that the Parish Council should endorse the development of a Culworth Village Plan that will contain what the people who live in and who depend on the village think is most important. Culworth Parish Council endorsed this proposal and a steering group was formed. The first step of this initiative was seen in the village hall on July 15th. Here there was a village gathering and display of aerial photos and maps of the village past and present, village history, a view of the village web site, Culworth School work on Our Village, photo montage of village houses and most importantly of all a chance for everyone to have a say about our village.
Was the day a success?
The afternoon brought 40% of households from all areas of the village to the village hall.
There were 6 clear areas of work for future development in Culworth:
Environment, for instance: green spaces, trees, traditional character and dog fouling.
Amenities, for instance: post office and shops, public transport.
Community, for instance: apathy and good sense, role of the school and church.
Housing, for instance: future development should be in keeping with the character of the village.
Traffic, for instance: speed, parking and volume of traffic, and the school run
Recreation, for instance: lack of play facilities and social activity for youth and adult interests.
Within in each of these areas there were lots of pluses and minuses, and ideas and concerns.
Many debates were stimulated pouring over photos and maps.
Those who had lived all their lives in Culworth met those who had just arrived.
Lots of interest was shown in the web site as a means of keeping abreast of what is going on in the village and a youth area is now in the planning stage.
Several new people have signed up to join the Village Plan steering group to help take this forward.
Any applications we may put forward for funding are strengthened by the clear whole community involvement.
The data and information from the day will be written up and circulated to the whole village (on paper and on the web) with details of what happens next, as this is just the beginning.
